The Royal Designers invite applications from early-career designers, scientists and
engineers from all backgrounds to join us at our three-day residential Session at Dartington
Hall in Devon. If you have between 3 and 15 years of professional experience, you are eligible
to apply for a free place. Deadline 3 July, 2023.
Optimism
This year's theme is "Optimism", by which we mean optimism about the capacity of the
endless inventiveness of the human spirit to bring about change for the better....
Designers, engineers and scientists are generally optimists, spending their lives responding
to problems. At our Session we do not intend to identify. Instead the experience is openended,
and open-started. There is no expectation of an outcome that is physical, but it
might instead be emotional, or it might be the birth and feeding of an idea. We direct this
invitation to those who have grown out of their support structure who may now be feeling in
need of a new sort of support which will carry them over into the next phase of life and
work.
Details
Working together with 12 Royal Designers and 8 wildcards over three days and two nights,
the Session provides a catalyst for cross-inspiration, reflection and challenge as we share
experience and search for confidence and insight.
Supported by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, we are delighted to offer free
places to all successful candidates including accommodation and meals, and transport
from London. Up to 30 places are available via this Call.

The Royal Designers
The title ‘Royal Designer for Industry’ (RDI) is awarded annually by the RSA to designers of
all disciplines who have achieved ‘sustained design excellence, work of aesthetic value and
significant benefit to society’. The RDI is the highest accolade for designers in the UK.
