Message from John Lavery - Faces of Science
Ladies and Gentlemen, Dr Harriet Stanway-Gordon (1851 Research Fellow 2024) is looking for support from the 1851 community. She is leading an initiative called “Faces of Science” which seeks to showcase the human side of science, mixing a few things together: celebrating the community we have but also "demystifying" science as a field (and hopefully as a result improving research culture and widening access by being like "there is no stereotypical scientist, look we're all just people"). The project currently “lives” on Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/facesofscience.bsky.social) and LinkedIn ( https://tinyurl.com/3jsvddjw) and is looking for more people to feature - everybody who considers themselves a scientist (in any part of science) is welcome.
At the moment, Harriet is just asking individuals to submit a picture of themselves "being a scientist", a picture of themselves "being human" and then the answer to one of a selection of questions – the tile below on shows more details. Looking further ahead she is looking to enhance the project with a podcast and would be seeking people who are happy to chat in more depth about their work, life and experiences.

Might I encourage any one from the 1851 alumni who “identifies” as a scientist to consider participating – this is a great way of changing perception/stereotyping and engaging with those individuals who are considering a career in the science environment, and if you think you are podcast material please let Hannah know.
Very warmest regards
John
